As a keynote speaker, I often like to explore simple yet powerful metaphors that help us reflect on group dynamics, teamwork and growth. One of my favorite examples comes from an unlikely source: the bat.
Why the Bat Lerio?
The bat is blind, yet it moves with astonishing precision. How? By emitting a sound – pip, pip, pip – and listening carefully to the feedback it receives. That feedback tells the bat if there’s an obstacle ten meters away, or even just a couple of millimeters ahead. With this constant input, the bat adjusts its flight path, avoiding collisions and staying on course.
Feedback as Our Navigation System
In the same way, feedback allows us to understand where we stand in relation to our goals. It helps us be aware of obstacles ahead, make small adjustments, and stay aligned with the path.
Without feedback, we risk moving blindly, repeating mistakes, or even crashing into challenges we could have avoided. With feedback, however, we gain clarity, direction, and the ability to reach our objectives more effectively.
Turning Feedback Into Growth
Just like the bat, we can use feedback as a GPS. Or maybe more of a NSG: Navigation System for Growth. Instead of fearing it, we can embrace it as a guide that keeps us moving forward – whether in our careers, personal lives, or within a team.
The next time you receive feedback, think of the bat: it’s not criticism, it’s simply an echo helping you adjust your flight.
And next time you’re offering feedback, remember that it has the power to build trust, help others grow and progress.
